As part of the American Bamboo Society 2019 Conference, a one day workshop will be taught in Charissa Brock’s Studio.
“The Fine Craft of Bamboo” one day workshop
Until recently, the use of bamboo as an art material has been a mystery in the United States. Through examples, demonstrations and a project, students will learn how to use heat preparation, splitting, cutting, bending and tying. The end result will be a small-scale vessel which will be easy to take home.

Bamboo: More Than Just Panda Fodder!
PORTLAND OREGON, October 16-20, 2019 — The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Bamboo Society will be hosting the American Bamboo Society (ABS) conference this year in Portland. In this hands-on conference, participants will see and touch bamboo in the garden, as a farm crop, being used as cane, in the pursuit of art, and as a tool to combat climate change. Four days of tours of beautiful gardens, knowledgeable presenters in growing and working with bamboo, and a great networking BBQ party will take place in various locations in the greater Portland area.
This conference features field trips to Bamboo Valley in Albany, Bamboo Garden Nursery in North Plains, the World Bamboo Exhibit at the Hoyt Arboretum, Portland Japanese Garden, The Lan Su Chinese Garden, and a few other wonderful bamboo related destinations. Saturday morning there will be lectures at Bamboo Garden Nursery: Jos van Der Palen, of Kimmei Nursery, a renowned Dutch horticulturalist & bamboo collector, will tell stories about collecting bamboo in the past, present, and future. Andrea Melnychenko, of Cool Terra, will talk about using biochar in horticultural applications. Daphne Lewis, author of Farming Bamboo, will speak about small scale bamboo farming on land marginal to the main enterprise of an area. Deke Gundersen, of Pacific University, will talk about a collaborative project between Clean Water Services, Pacific University, and
Bamboo Garden Nursery using bamboo in a bioswale to treat municipal wastewater. Saturday evening a BBQ dinner and a rare bamboo auction will take place. There will be two hands-on classes that participants can register for: a class in building bamboo fencing by Mark Meenan, owner of American Bamboo Company, and a class called “The Fine Art Of Bamboo” by Charissa Brock, owner of Bamboo Sculpture LLC. This event is sponsored by: KBOO, Bamboo Garden Nursery, Bamboo Valley, Bamboo Rescue, and Bamboo Oasis.
