Bamboo 101: The Basics of Crafting With Bamboo

September 16 @ 8:00 am - September 19 @ 4:00 pm PDT

$350

Fri, Sep 16, 2022, 9:00 AM –

Mon, Sep 19, 2022, 4:00 PM PDT

Come learn about bamboo as a living plant and about how you can use it as an art material. Class takes place in my 900 sq foot studio in Beaverton Oregon. A visit to Bamboo Garden, a 20 acre bamboo farm in North Plains Oregon will kick off the workshop, where we will discuss bamboo growth, gathering/grove grooming, and varieties suited for working with. Day one we will meet at my place to carpool. We will gather our materials at this amazing garden then we will spend the next three days working with it in my studio. Techniques taught over the next three days will include: Bamboo preparation, cutting, heat bending, drilling, traditional splitting, using traditional knives to prepare strips, pegging, creating holes in bamboo, and tying and binding techniques. This is a class is learning a wide variety of techniques, so students will take home small samples of a variety of techniques (rather than taking home a finished project/decorative object).

The class is $350 and needs a minimum of two students to run. The class is maxed out at 6 students, I like to keep things small so students have individual attention. Students will need to sign a liability waiver and are responsible for any injuries they may have in class (unlikely to happen beyond minor cuts). Tools and materials will be provided. Students will need to bring a sack lunch each day. Pre-registration is required and a $50.00 deposit will hold the spot. Cancellation must be made two weeks in advance to receive a refund on the deposit, minus a small banking fee of $3.00. Proof of vaccine required.

If we need to cancel the class due to the pandemic a full refund will be made.
