Lecture on Japan trip, July 21st, 2018 at Ned’s Bash, The Annual Ned Jaquith Organization Fundraiser at Bamboo Garden Nursery
The annual "Ned’s Bash" will be held Saturday July 21, 2018! A potluck, workshops, an auction, and kids activities promise to be fun for the whole family. Optional overnight camping will go until dawn Sunday July 22. This family oriented event is held at Bamboo Garden, 18900 NW Collins Road, North Plains 97133. The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Bamboo Society hosts a festival each year at the Steven’s Pavilion, Hoyt Arboretum, 4000 SW Fairview Blvd, Portland, OR 97221. Members bring plants, art, tools, books and handcrafts to sell. There will be a demonstration of dividing a root-bound potted bamboo. The light and the shadow, bamboo and glass vessels, August 10-14, 2018, Peters Valley School of Craft, PA
Bamboo is a wonderfully complex art material that can be used in a variety of ways to create form. It can be split into narrow strips, bent, crosscut, woven, sewn, and drilled. It can be used to make small scale objects or architectural structures. In this class we will explore using small bamboo and glass elements to create vessel forms that play with light and shadow. When traveling through Japan one sees bamboo baskets everywhere. The baskets are used to hold everyday objects, are incorporated into tea ceremony, and carried around as purses. In this class we will learn about bamboo as a plant and art material, see demonstrations of creating basket materials, look at bamboo baskets through a powerpoint lecture, and most importantly, make a bamboo basket which can be used as a purse or container to hold objects. Two weekends October 13-14 and October 20-21 Every year dozens of artists in the Portland area open their studios to the public to talk about, share, and sell their work. This year I will be too! Sitka Invitational, November 3 – 4 2018 , Located in Miller Hall at the World Forestry Center Experience nature-inspired artwork in a variety of mediums and interpretations. Our 25th annual Art Invitational will showcase 350+ works of sculpture, ceramics, paintings, metalwork, glass, fiber arts, book arts and prints, by more than 130 Northwest artists. If you are interested in taking private lessons feel free to contact me. I would be happy to talk about what you want to learn, create a lesson plan, and schedule a class for us. Classes are $40 per hour with a minimum of three hours. Additional students can be added for a fee. I can teach school age children, teens and adults basketry, bamboo, and glass techniques. Classes can be tailored to Homeschool students.
